In the Autumn of 1888 I don't suppose that there was a lot of street lighting in Whitechapel and some of the streets and alleyways I visited last night on a Jack the Ripper tour were still quite poorly lit. The tour guide was an associate of Russell Edwards, who quite possibly solved the mystery of the Ripper's identity, and wrote a convincing book which you can find out about here. The guide illustrated her two-hour script with contemporary photos (from Russell's book) on her iPad, including enough crime scene and mortuary ones for even the most bloodthirsty tourist. In the late 18th century, photography meant wet plate, but now this is just one of many filters available in the Silver Efex plugin (and which I used for this photo). If you have an Amazon Prime account, you might like to know that Series 4 of Ripper Street will start there on 15 January.
