Last July I blogged a photo I'd taken during a time trail of the 100th Tour de France, so as yesterday's stage was routed through the village of Roxwell in Essex, only about an hour's ride from my home, I pumped up my tyres and set off to join the thousands who had gathered there.  The excitement in the crowd was palpable as the convoy of vehicles of all shapes and sizes swept through ahead of the racers, and as the helicopters approached I felt as if I was in a scene from Close Encounters of the Third Kind.  I'll forgive the schoolboy in front of me whose hair crept into my shot.  It may have been a gust of wind or perhaps it was standing on end, but either way I'm sure of that no-one who was there will forget the experience.
